On Mother’s Day, mothers around the world will be presented with homemade handicrafts, chocolate and flowers – well deserved, I might add. You’re doing a great job, mommies! 😉 But I think it’s also a great time to give thanks and presents to another very important mother figure in our lives: Mother Earth. So if you’re joining me this year with these environmentally conscious gift ideas, read on:
A little love for Mother Earth
This year I have been thinking a little bit about the consumerist madness of our society, especially on holidays of this kind. And at some point, I came to the conclusion that every year on this holiday, a mother we as humans all share is completely forgotten: Mother Earth.
She gives us the most beautiful gifts every day: sunshine, rain, fresh air, fascinating nature and quite simply… our lives. So how about this year, in addition to our own amazing mothers, we also give a gift to Mother Earth? Here are five simple, environmentally conscious gift ideas:
5 Environmentally Conscious Gift Ideas for Mother Earth
1. Buy reusable water bottles and coffee mugs
Plastic waste is a huge threat to our blue planet. It fills our oceans and threatens its inhabitants. Fish, birds and marine mammals die every day because they either eat the plastic or get entangled in it. Huge plastic carpets in the sea also change their habitat – less light reaches the bottom and food shortages occur.
The plastic waste is also not without danger for humans. Tiny particles mix with our drinking water and are thus gradually deposited in our bodies.
The solution? Do without plastic as often as possible. With a reusable water bottle or a Travelmug for your daily caffeine intake, you avoid plastic waste such as to-go cups and PET bottles that end up in the trash after use.
2. Plant some flowers
You gave your mom a huge bouquet of flowers and she was probably thrilled, no? Do the same for Mother Earth and give her a bouquet of sunflowers, daisies, violets or whatever you like best. Your balcony or garden will surely thank you and you and Mother Earth can enjoy this special gift for a long time to come. 😉
3. Cook with regional and seasonal ingredients
While it is quite normal today to be able to buy bananas, mangoes, and avocados in the supermarket all year round, it is unfortunately not that great for Mother Earth. Because through cultivation and transportation to foreign countries we humans consume quite a lot of important resources.
Why don’t you cook something for Mother’s Day that you can conjure up from locally grown and seasonal ingredients? Not only will it be just as delicious, but you can also feast with a clear conscience.
4. Buy new clothes from sustainable brands or second-hand
I would be the last person to tell you to stop shopping. Because I’m the last person who can say no to a shopping trip. But if you just choose a sustainable brand over a huge corporation one, two, three times when you buy something new, you’ve already done something good.
There are now many brands that produce in an environmentally friendly way or support a non-profit organization with their sales. If the research takes too much time, there are also great online shops such as rrrevolve.ch or favorite-fair.ch where you can browse at your whim.
5. Treat yourself to a really cool shopping bag
Speaking of shopping: All those plastic bags they give you when you go shopping… Yeah, they don’t exactly help with the plastic problem. So why not get a really cool re-usable shopping bag on your next shopping trip with your best friend? You can take it with you every time you go shopping – not only do you save money because you don’t have to buy a new bag every time, but you also reduce plastic waste!
